The Basics: LED Light Bulbs
Short for Light-Emitting Diode, LED light bulbs are fast becoming the go-to technology for all manner of lighting, be it commercial or residential, interior or exterior. These tiny diodes use a semiconductor to convert electricity into light. Their ability to emit that light in a specific direction minimizes the need for various reflectors and diffusers, a feature that makes them even more attractive and easy to employ in LED bulb design.
From LED flashlight and control panel bulbs to LED tube lamps, the LED variety of virtually every type of light bulb is more energy efficient and longer lasting than previous technologies. And though their initial cost may be higher than more conventional light bulbs, they pay for themselves in short order, going on to save energy and costs for the entirety of their vastly longer lifespans. And over the past several years, their initial cost has fallen more than 85 percent, showing that this superior technology is here to stay. If you’re looking for new light fixtures or to upgrade existing, LED lights are the way to go.
Below, we provide some basic information on the various categories of LED bulbs, showing you how this technology has improved upon older designs to provide the most energy-efficient, longest-lasting and most cost-effective lighting solutions to date.
Reflector LED Light Bulbs
As the name suggests, reflector light bulbs employ a variety of reflectors that help direct and amplify the light of the bulb. These are used in a wide array of flood lights, landscape lights, and interior recessed lighting and track lighting applications. With LED technology, the way the light of each diode is reflected depends on the particular design — generally, the optics or apertures of each diode is adjusted for the desired effect, and some designs even provide individual reflectors for each diode. The end result is a more efficient and effective deployment of light.
Certain fixtures designed for halogen reflector bulbs and the like may allow for the use of the newer LED lights. Your fixture’s manufacturer should have the information you need, or you can contact us and we’ll be happy to help you find the answer.
LED Tube Lights
Tube lights have seen some major advancements in recent years thanks to LED technology. We see the ever-present four-foot and eight-foot fluorescent tube virtually everywhere we go — retail outlets, warehouses, factories, even in our own homes. Given their ubiquitous nature, the replacement of older fluorescent technology with newer LED lights has had a major impact on energy consumption throughout the world.
Depending on the exact variety of your existing fluorescent lighting fixtures, a range of retrofitting options are available to help bring you the savings you’re looking for without the cost of buying all-new LED tube fixtures. A wide array of solutions exist to help companies and individuals alike update their current lighting, and many power companies and governments have incentive programs in place to make it even more worth your while.
Whether you’re looking to retrofit or purchase new, Lighting Supply has a great deal of experience providing companies of all sizes with the bulk orders of LED bulbs and fixtures they need to start saving on their energy costs today. Tell us what you need on our Volume Pricing Page and we’ll be happy to help you get started!
Standard LED Light Bulbs
As with fluorescent tube bulbs, the standard light bulb found in homes throughout the world has one of the biggest impacts on worldwide energy consumption. As you’ve no doubt seen in recent years when you go to pick up some light bulbs for your home, the shelves are now crowded with all kinds of standard LED light bulbs — it may even become more difficult for you to find the old incandescent bulbs you’re used to.
For the past several years, both governments and power companies have been pushing for the switch to more energy-efficient lighting, resulting in a wide range of LED light bulb and fixture options. And since the standard home light bulb is one of the most widely used, it makes sense to start there.
The good news is that most every existing light fixture in your home that accommodates the Edison screw, the standard threaded base on your average light bulb, can also accommodate the new standard LED light bulbs. Simply check the package for comparable brightness, screw in your new LED bulbs as you normally would, and enjoy the cleaner, brighter light, along with the lower energy bills!
Decorative LED Light Bulbs
From globe bulbs to candelabra bulbs, dimmable light bulbs, vintage light bulbs and more, virtually every form of decorative light bulb now has an LED equivalent. Similar to the standard LED light bulb, many decorative LED light bulbs have been designed to fit most existing light fixtures.
As always, when in doubt about the LED compatibility of your light fixtures, simply contact us and we’ll be happy to help!
High Intensity LED Light Bulbs
As you can imagine, high intensity light bulbs require more energy than most, making LED light bulbs a wise decision. From corn cob LED lights to tubular, E- and B-shapes, we have a wide selection of high intensity LED bulbs for every application. Contact the manufacturer of your fixture for LED compatibility, or check with us and we’ll help you find the answers you need.
